Good yarn for summer knitting?
I want to knit a halter-top for myself for summer. I have a pattern I like, but I don't know what yarn I should try and use.
I know there is a Cotton Yarn out there, but I don't like how it feels on my skin.
How many cottons have you tried? I recommend that you shop around. Most new knitters think peaches and cream when they think cotton, and I'm with you there. That stuff is for dishcloths only.
Cotton exists in many different forms, and if you find a local yarn shop, you can experience many of them. I'm not talking about AC Moore, or Wal Mart, I'm talking about a real, honest to goodness, local yarn shop. You'll never be the same.
You may want to go with a mercerized cotton. They are much softer with a nice sheen.
Stay away from any type of acrylic for a good breathing garment. They can be as soft as they want, but deep in their soul, they're still plastic. You can't wear plastic in the summer.
Off the top of my head, I'd recommend Nashua Handknits Creative Focus Cotton, or their Cilantro (70% cotton, 30% acrylic, which is just enough to give it a bit more durability, but not enough to loose the charm of the breathable cotton), Rowan has several nice cottons (I die inside for Cotton Glace. The colors are fantastic), as does Debbie Bliss.
That stuff you can buy at the hobby store for 2 bucks is not the only cotton put on this big Earth. I've seen many knitter tell me that they don't like cotton only to fall in love with the stuff once they get their hands on some Calmer (that's another one, a Rowan yarn) or something else that was made with the discerning knitter (and not just washcloth knitter) in mind. Don't cross cotton off of your list until you've actually knit with nice cotton
