St. Patrick's day is officially upon us! My mother's side of the family is
part Irish, and we've been preparing for our annual St. Patty's Day party all
week. The corned beef and cabbage is done, the house is clean, and the
playlist is made. While I was helping get things ready, my mind soon wrapped
itself around all things Irish, including Irish crochet. What better time of
the year than St. Partrick's Day to learn about this fascinating crochet
method that leaves me breathless.
Irish crochet is a type of lace that dates back to the 19th century in
Ireland. It is characterized by separately crocheted motifs that are later
assembled onto a mesh background, or connected to each other with thing thread
and needle. A very fine steel crochet hook is needed to make Irish Crochet
Lace, as well as fine crochet cotton or linen thread.
Although it looks and sounds rather advanced and intricate, mastering Irish

what if my crochet width is correct for the gauge but the length is too long. How do I correct?
I'm using #10 Knit Cro-sheen with a #5 steel hook which the pattern calls for. When I do my gauge 9dc=1' and 9 dc rows = 2" the width is right but the length is 2 1/4" long. How do I adjust. I tried #7 steel crochet hook and it was even larger.
My impression with the video that the golden loop lengthens the vertical, I want to shorten the vertical while maintaining the width.
The problem you're describing has to do with how much loop you pull through the stitch from the previous row. The concept/technique to correct vertical gauge in crochet is called "the golden loop."

It's the same principle whether you lengthen or shorten it. If you want to change your actual vertical gauge, that's where the change has to occur. See this comment from Jean Leinhauser, one of the creators of the CGOA Masters Program. "This loop you've just drawn up -- the Golden Loop -- determines the HEIGHT of your stitch. The only alternative to the golden loop (to adjust gauge) is to modify the pattern itself to suit your needs.
