Has any one got experience of knitting with recycled sari silk yarn?
Have you any tips or advice knitting with this type of yarn. I think they look lovely and colourfull but are too expensive to be experimenting with.
Has anyone any patterns? Apart from the ones on the knitty or mango moon web sites. I would like to make a scarf so any advice re: Needle Size, and amounts of yarn would also help. Also should it be knitted singularly or combined with another yarn for best effect.
I have never worked with recycled sari silk yarn before, but I imagine it's quite luxurious. I would recommend that you keep your tension as loose as possible to keep it soft and definitely set your gauge before starting the actual scarf. You want to make sure that it has enough softness without loosing its shape, and if you are the type who knits quite tightly, definitely experiment with larger sized needles than recommended by the label.
A great yarn doesn't need a fancy pattern to show it off, and I would suggest you choose a simple design for a fancy yarn. If you can draw it, even just the shape or the color or length, draw it so that you have something to shoot for. Then you can find a pattern that will follow suit more easily. Think in terms of your wardrobe- what would you wear it with, and how can you show it off without overpowering your outfits? Can it work together with some ensemble you already have?
An old favorite scarf pattern of mine from "The Workshop Book of Knitting" has rows where you are actually knitting onto a ruler so that you can have just loose strands of yarn intermittently, which makes a great unique alternative. It could look cool with your recycled material!
