The Wacom Bamboo is a popular pen stylus for iPad and iPhone. It's a longtime
favorite of several of iMore's editors and contributors, and comes from one of

Which is more important, a good tablet, or a good program?
Right now I have a really low quality bamboo pen, and I've been thinking about getting a better tablet, an Intuos4. But I also would like photoshop or corel painter. I have corel painter essentials 4 AND Photoshop elements 8, but I think that I might want to upgrade to the full program, instead of the baby program.
So, here are my questions. And i'm always up for more information!
1. Is it better to have an great tablet and an ok program, or an ok tablet and a great program?
2. Which is better for digital art(anime, people, animation, etc.) adobe photoshop, or corel painter?
3. Is the Intuos4 really THAT superiour to bamboo pen tablets?
4. Just for art hobby and self teaching, is the small intuos4 or the medium better?

Hhhhmmmm.... the chicken or the egg kind of question. I'd get the tablet first because it's not going to do you any good to have a top of the line program and a lousy tablet. If you've been using PE4 and Elements for your art up to now, you can continue using them for a little while longer.
If all you plan to do is art, get Painter. I'm a firm believer in getting the software created to do the job. If all you plan to do is anime, Painter is going to be too much program. Are there any programs for manga/anime that will give you the tools you need without a load of things you'll never use?
The Intuos series is for artists. The tilt sensitivity of the pen gives it the "feel" of a real brush. With Intuos, the width of the line you paint is determined both by pressure and by tilt. Of course, with more control comes more complicated configuring and you have to keep up with it. You have to keep the driver updated and tweak settings when necessary. How we handle a brush in the morning is different than how we handle it in the evening so things like pressure sensitivity, etc. will need to be tweaked a little.
I had the old Graphire which I really liked. The Bamboo came out the next year. From what I know about them the Bamboo was really designed for beginners and for fun. The Graphire was a more serious tablet for its price. Wacom has a new series of Bamboos out (again!) so you might want to take a look at them before buying the Intuos.
When I upgraded to Intuos, I got a medium because I'm a tall woman who had always drawn and painted with big strokes. I wish I'd gotten the small one. It seems like I have to move my hand a mile to draw every line. Last year, a post on the Elements forum I belong to asked about tablet sizes and everyone said they preferred the small tablet. You should compare the active area of your Bamboo to the active areas of the tablets you're considering. Wacom is changing models so quickly lately that it's best to measure and choose a new tablet with the dimensions that will be optimum for you.
