Crochet vs Knitting, which do you prefer and why?
I self taught myself knitting and then a few years later I taught myself crochet. I had a hard time learning how to crochet at first.
My husband can crochet, but doesn't understand knitting at all (I've tried).
I like both.
Crochet:
-I feel like I can do a lot more with it
-Projects work up really fast
-hard to tell where the end of a row is sometimes
Knitting
-I like the smooth fabric
-I like cables, very easy to do
-I don't like dropped stitches
I don't think I could choose one over the other though.
I like both and have preferences for one over the other in specific projects, but no preference overall. I also enjoy tatting, bobbin lace, spinning, dyeing, counted cross-stitch, and hardanger. At the moment I'm on a tatting binge but it cycles which fiber art is my passion in a given week.
I prefer crochet for doilies and afghans.
I prefer knitting for garments.
Crochet lends itself to free-form work better and to unusual shapes. But it does use more yarn and produces a more highly textured fabric than knitting which may be annoying worn close to the skin. It doesn't stretch much, which again is great for doilies and afghans, but not so great for sweaters and socks.
Knitting produces a smoother fabric with higher definition in intricate stitches. It has nicer drape for garments. There is no comparison to knitting for socks. It's more economical on yarn and there are more patterns and books available because it's more popular at the moment. I've tried knitting doilies and they're just plain unsatisfying compared to crochet or tatting. And knitted afghans snag and stretch.
On the needles/hooks right now.... I have a knit lace stole (Forrest Path), a knit sweater (ribbed shawl collar), basic knit socks (I keep them handy in my purse for waiting rooms and such) and a Crocheted Doily. With my knitting I like to keep one fiddly piece like lace that requires deep concentration, and one no-brainer piece like a sweater that is relaxing. I don't feel the same need with my crocheting perhaps because I can always blow off steam with the sweater or socks.
