There was a time when knitting was considered a pastime for old ladies and spinsters who had nothing better to do than make sweaters, mittens and afghans for their grandchildren. Since then, however, knitting has infiltrated the hipster scene, and become the hobby of choice for many trendy young women (and a few men). There are even bars and pubs that offer "Knitting Night," where knitters can come and knit together while drinking a few cold ones and chatting with their fellow craft-lovers. Since the idea of DIY (do it yourself) is so big with the hipster crowd, crafts and hobbies that encourage creating things from scratch are more popular than ever.
The hippest part about knitting is the things you can create with a couple of knitting needles and a whole lot of yarn. At the same time that knitters are enjoying their favorite hobby, passing the time and looking cool while doing it, they are also creating something they can wear, use or give as a gift. Trying to knit a scarf, part way through, it's morphed into double it's size?
when casting off, I started out with 15 stitches across, I've got quite a lot knitted, and it's suddenly very wide and 32 stitches across! I have no idea how this happened... or how to avoid it. where did I go wrong?
Are you only doing knit stitch or are you alternating knit and purl? If you're alternating, then it's easy to forget to put the yarn back in the correct position before knitting right after you purled or vice versa. This can cause you to form two loops where there is only supposed to be one.
If you're not alternating knit and purl, then it's possible you may be accidentally knitting a loop twice before pulling it off your needle (once in the front and once in the back). This is called increasing, and it is a technique used by experienced knitters to shape a garment.
Until you figure out what you're doing wrong, you may want to make sure to count each row of loops every time you finish knitting a row to make sure that you still have only 15 loops.
