What is the best way to fix lace knitted items?
Hello, I am beginning my second lace project. It is a Tote Bag with weight 4 Cotton Yarn. From my experience with my first project, whenever I would mess up, I would have to rip everything. I know how to drop a stitch at the column of a messed up stitch and then use a crochet hook to get everything back on the needle but with lace patterns, I don't see how I can do this since the loops are much more complicated, i.e. yarn overs and knit 2 together. Am I correct in thinking that I need to rip it out instead of dropping the stitch at a column and working my way down?
No, no. I never ever rip anything out. I just don't. I have a rule about that. I have "tinked" which is not the same thing. I have pulled out a row, and then put the stitches back on the needles, but I would not want to rip it all out and start over.
I have done much lace and have had to fix a mistake many times. There are many ways to do it, depending on how bad the mistake is. If you can drop a stitch (or a couple of stitches) and latch them back up, that is fine. But as you say, many times you can't because of all the K2tog and the YOs... which are not complicated, just awkward.
I have dropped down one whole repeat, and latched them back up, if it was more than 4 rows. I didn't want to re-knit all those rows when I had 1250 stitches! It can be done, I have done it, and the Yarnharlot has a tutorial on it as well. It requires nerves of steel, and a great deal of patience.
Of course, you always always use lifelines! Search for the term and how to use it. I also use stitch markers after every pattern repeat, usually no more than 20 stitches or so, and that way I rarely ever make a mistake and don't have to rip. I really enjoy doing Lace Knitting, although it can be very boring so I need other knitting, just to stay sane. If you don't make mistakes, then you don't need to worry about doing repairs!! LOL
