Is knitting with a loom easier than with needles?
I bought a knitting kit and tried to knit for the first time last night...it was HARD! Not that I expected to pick it up right away, but my ability to handle the needles was pretty poor. Is knitting on a loom maybe the better way to start? Video tutorials of that seemed much more intuitive than ones with needles. I don't want to do anything that hard for now, just scarves and maybe some blankets. Any thoughts from knitting pros out there?
As with any craft there is a learning curve but the curve for the knitting looms is less then with needles. I do both needles and looms.
With the knitting looms the basic e-wrap stitch is the through the back loop or twisted knit stitch on needles. The fabric is stockinette rather then garter. If you want garter you need to learn to purl. Looms do "turn" as you do with needles so each row is done from one side, thus the stockinette. Purls are mostly done one peg at a time.
As you mentioned there are many video tutorials of Loom Knitting and more being done all the time, but there are also ones for needle. So be sure to check them both out.
It does take time and practice to learn to handle needles but that is just a matter of training your hands. You also have some training in loom knitting for holding and knitting them, but I don't think there is as much.
Looms can do just about everything you can on needles. Some things are easier, and some take a lot more work. Even on small looms you can make things like afghans but doing them by panels that are attached to each other.
There are two types of knitting looms. The single rake knitting looms have one row of pegs and are knit from one peg to the next over. The double rake knitting looms have two rows of pegs set across from each other and are knit from one side to the other making a double thick piece for most things, but this depends on the stitch.
If you are not totally sure of the looms the best way to go is to get one of the Provo Craft Knifty Knitter looms. You can get them in round or panel oval ones. The panel oval ones are both a single and a double rake combo, meaning they can be used either way. The Provo people also make a snap on piece that can adjust the size of any oval loom to make it smaller. These are some of the cheapest looms available. Oh hobby lobby does carry a loom like the knifty knitter but in other colors.
When someone is not sure about loom knitting I always suggest to go cheap. It is better to spend a little money before advancing to the more expensive on line vendor looms. I have many of those more expensive and still I use my knifty knitters.
Do be aware that the knifty knitters are a large gauged loom, being about a size 13-15 needle. They mostly require a double strand of worsted Weight Yarn, but with other stitches I do use a single to get a very nice warm hat from worsted.
