GORENTAS, Turkey (AP) -- Syrian rebel commander Ahmad Mihbzt and his ragtag
fighters grabbed their aging rifles to fight Syrian troops advancing on their
village, but soon fled under a rain of exploding artillery shells."We will

in european knitting patterns, do you start from the bottom of the project?
I am knitting a purse, and I had assumed you started it from the Top Down and I couldn't understand the pattern but I was wondering if you were supposed to know that it started from the bottom up? They way the purse shows in the picture, I can't figure it out by the stitches printed in the directions
I know they are different from american patterns and I had no trouble figuring out the rest of the european terms and measurments

Like American patterns European patterns can start at the bottom and work up or the top and work down. Without knowing the pattern or the source it is difficult to know which direction it is written for. I suggest that you read the pattern completely, assuming it is in English, before you start, or if it is graphed, also possible, that you learn the graph symbols. Perhaps you can point us to the URL for it.

I looked, thank you, that's a nice pattern, and Dale patterns are always nice when they are worked up. It is, as others have told you, worked bottom up and your needle is too long for this one unless you like the Magic Loop method (IMO it's a major PITA).
Let's see what else I can tell you. The squares with the dot in them are purl stitches and the squares with that tent in them is a 6 stitch cable where you put the first three stitches on a cable needle and hold it to the back, knit the next three and then the three from the needle. Because all your stitches are worked on the public side of the work, blank squares will always be knit and dotted squares will always be purled. Remember that when working in the round you get garter stitch by knitting one round and purling the next round (yes, I know that this makes stockinette stitch when knitting flat, but it makes garter stitch in the round). You may also, if you know how to do this, make a provisional cast on with a crochet chain and then graft the bottom stitches closed rather than seaming them--leave yourself a very long tail (3 or 4 feet) to do this. There is a dictionary for these stitches if you click on the link at the top of the pattern page, too, to translate them from Norwegian to English. I happen to love Dale patterns, btw, they are very accurate and always very pretty when finished.
