I am working on a pattern for a Santa Claus, shown here:

The pattern starts out with the cream color, starting at the neck and working down in rows, eventually establishing the arm holes and then just making the piece longer...
Up to row 13, I have done everything perfect, all the stitch counts match. Now, as it turns into RND 14, I am completely lost. It says "do not turn," so the only place for me to go now is up (instead of back and forth) the middle (where the buttons would go if there were to be any, this piece looks like a vest right now, so I am pretty sure that's correct. what I don't understand, is the stitch count for round 16. it says 88, but my last row is 75, and going all the way around this piece would add up to way more than 88! Can someone PLEASE shed some light on this for me?? I would deeply appreciate it! Thanks!
You are now going to join the first stitch of row 13 to the last stitch of row 13 resulting in the beginning of a tube shaped section with 75 stitches in all.
From what I can gather, you were imagining going up the side of the piece in order to go around the outside edge, rather than joining the row into a round.
Instead, fold your piece, pretty side outward so that the first and last stitches of row 13 are next to each other. From the last stitch of the row, the one still attached to the hook, insert the hook into the top of the first stitch of the row. Pull through a loop and then continue on, pulling that loop until it also passes through the loop that was on your hook. That is a Slip Stitch used to join the flat piece into a tube so it can be worked in the round. From this point on, you don't turn because you're working in the round, from the outside of the tube.

I went back and looked at the pattern further. I thought it odd to be half way done with the instructions and not to have changed color or be very far along in the robe. Turns out that's only the first page of around 5 pages of instructions. It mentions a download link, but I couldn't find one. I wound up downloading the Pattern From here: http://www.free-crochet.com/detail.html?code=FC00508&cat_id=1 but they really grilled me for personal information with the obvious intent to use it for advertising. Fortunately, I keep a special email address for just such sites. I'll look to see if I can find a complete copy elsewhere and report back.
