How do I repair and clean my great-grandmother's crocheted bedspread?
I am now the keeper of my great-grandmother's dimensional rose block crocheted bedspread. A few tie off knots have come undone and the spread has not been laundered (or even used) in 10 to 15 years. I'm pretty sure the yarn is acrylic or polyester but I have absolutely no crochet experience.
What is the best way to fix the undone knots and clean the spread? I'd love to keep it around for another 50 years.
REPAIR
Tie off knots should never be cut. They're woven into the surrounding stitches and some people create more than one knot to avoid unraveling. You can weave them back in with a large eye yarn needle like this: http://crochet.about.com/library/bl_weave_ends.htm
If your blanket is coming undone, check to see if there's a crochet "club" near you. Someone there should be able to repair it.
WASHING
You can always take the blanket to a drycleaner, they'll kow the best way to launder it. Best not to wash it until the repair is done. Generally you can wash modern blankets in the washing machine, but with the age of your blanket and the sentamental value, I'd recommend handwashing in bathtub with baby detergent, towel dry/lay flat to dry.
