A spacecraft orbiting a planet had a problem then fall towards a planet. The spacecraft falls 1200m in the first 10 seconds, after which the retro-rocket fires and the craft starts to accelerate upwards at 0.5g (1g=9.81m/s^2).
a) How long after the rocket fires does the craft stop falling?
b) How much further does the craft fall before stopping?
c) How many seconds after the rocket firers does the craft reach it's original orbit?

Assuming it falls these 1200m with a constant acceleration and is initially at rest, calculate it's upward velocity after 10 seconds:
s = (u + v)t / 2
-1200 = (0 + v) * 10 / 2
-1200 = 10v
v = -120 m/s
a) Now using that value as the initial velocity in the next part, calculate when v = 0:
v = u + at
0 = -120 + 0.5*9.81 * t
0 = -120 + 4.905t
4.905t = 120
t = 120 / 4.905
t = 24 s to two significant figures.
b) Again, using the -120 m/s as the initial velocity:
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
-120^2 = 0 + 2 * 0.5*9.81 * s
14400 = 9.81s
s = 14400 / 9.81
s = 1500 m to two signifaicant figures.
c) And using that value again, and setting the displacement to 1200 (the original orbit):
s = ut + 0.5at^2
1200 = -120t + 0.5 * 0.5*9.81 * t^2
1200 = -120t + 2.4525t^2
2.4525t^2 - 120t - 1200 = 0
327t^2 - 16000t - 160000 = 0
Solve with the quadratic formula:
t = ( -b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) ) / (2a)
t = ( 16000 +- sqrt(16000^2 + 4*327*160000) ) / (2*327)
t = ( 16000 +- sqrt(465280000) ) / 654
t = ( 8000 +- 400sqrt(727) ) / 327
