New Parents Guide for Newborn Layettes by Sean Patrick
For most of us, having a baby is one of the most exciting and profoundly transformative events of our lives. But to first-time parents, having a baby can also feel a little overwhelming. This is especially true when it comes to assembling a newborn layette. The sheer number of items that are needed to care for a newborn can make even the most avid shopper cringe.
But creating a newborn layette doesn't have to inspire dread. We've assembled this checklist to help you break the job into four smaller, more manageable steps. Following these instructions will lead to completion in just four shopping trips.
If you have a baby registry, consider making your requests based on one or two of the lists we'll provide in this article. Not only will this reduce the stress of having to choose items as you wander through the store, but it will also take a load off your mind to know that a quarter of your shopping is done.
Let's get started.
Step1: The room Although most people equate a newborn layette with small items like diapers and shampoo, your new baby's environment really begins with his or her room. Even if the little one will be sharing a room, make sure that you set aside a dedicated space with the following essentials: - A crib - A few mattress pads - 3 or 4 sets of sheets that fit the crib - 2 or 3 baby blankets for the crib - 2 or 3 receiving blankets, to be kept near the crib - A changing table - A tight-sealing waste receptacle for diapers - Curtains or shades for the windows
Step 2: Bath items Although it may be tempting to skip this step and just use the products you already have at home, there are a couple of reasons why it's worth buying some special bath products just for baby. Baby skin is very tender and delicate, and it can be sensitive to some common detergents. Babies are also more prone to skin infections and rashes than adults are, and many baby products contain ingredients that help combat this problem. With that in mind, here's a suggested list of toiletry items for your newborn layette: - Diapers and wipes - Baby wash and/or shampoo - Baby lotion - Cornstarch powder - Soft acrylic washcloths - Small towels for drying and swaddling the baby after a bath - An infant bathtub, if desired - Infant nail clippers and comb
Step 3: Feeding items The feeding accessories you'll need for your newborn layette will vary somewhat, depending on whether the infant will be breast-fed or not. Some first-time moms struggle with breast-feeding, so it's probably a good idea to buy at least one of each of the following, so you have them available — just in case. If you plan to bottle-feed your newborn, you'll definitely need to have the following on hand: - At least 4 complete bottles - Bottle brush (if you plan on hand-washing) - At least 8 burp cloths - Pediatrician-recommended formula
Even if you plan on breast-feeding, you'll need a few items for your newborn layette. In addition to at least 8 burp cloths, prepare your layette with: - A box of nursing pads for mom - A breast pump and collection jars - At least two bottles that can be sterilized (for away-from-home feedings)
Step 4: Newborn clothes This may well be the most tricky step of assembling a newborn layette, because baby clothes come in different sizes. It makes sense to wait until a week or two before the due date to buy baby clothes. Not only will this give you ample opportunity to return or exchange them if they're the wrong size (leave the tags on, just in case!), you will get a better idea of how big your baby will be at birth.
With that in mind, here's a clothing checklist for your newborn layette: - At least 8 "onesies" (all-in-one leotards) - A minimum of 4 nightgowns or sleepers - About 6 pairs of socks - At least 1 sweater or sweatshirt - At least 3 pairs of pants - Several knit caps, for sleeping - One outfit considered "dressy" - Several bibs - Several plastic diaper covers
Depending on the climate in which you live, you may also need a brimmed hat for the sun, a winter jacket and insulated pants, or a parka for sub-zero days.
Of course, there are many, many more things you could add to a newborn layette. Some parents choose to buy toys to the nursery, a baby monitor, or even the traditional silver spoon. Using these four lists, you'll know for sure you have the basics covered.

How to fix a horribly shrunken wool sweater?
I got a nice merena wool sweater from Italy for Christmas and in my convenience mind-set assumed that 'hand wash' translated to 'washing machine only in a garment bag' and to my dismay I took out my sweater and found that it had shrunk proportionally to the size of a small child sweater (I'm a size small in womens). I managed to stretch it to a large child sweater but that's all my progress.
Is there any way to stretch it back out to at least close to its original size?
And how, if I can fix this, do I avoid this happening again?

Wool SHRINKS with heat, must be hand or dry cleaned. Wool itches like the dickens anyhow! Try Cashmere next time around.
